Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI)
A Preventive Laser Procedure for Narrow-Angle Glaucoma
Narrow-angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage angle of the eye becomes too narrow, increasing eye pressure and risking sudden vision loss. Laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) is a safe, outpatient laser procedure used to prevent or treat this condition.
What Is LPI?
LPI uses a laser to create a tiny opening in the iris (the colored part of the eye). This opening improves fluid flow within the eye, relieving pressure buildup and reducing the risk of angle-closure glaucoma.
The procedure is quick, painless, and often performed in-office.
Who Is a Candidate?
LPI is recommended for patients diagnosed with narrow or closed angles, or those at risk for angle-closure glaucoma. Early treatment can prevent sudden increases in eye pressure that threaten vision.
What to Expect
Before the procedure, numbing eye drops are applied. The laser creates a small hole in the peripheral iris, which usually takes only a few minutes.
Some patients may experience mild discomfort or light sensitivity afterward. Follow-up visits monitor eye pressure and healing.
